eTRV+ achieves 51% saving in RBS Innovation Gateway Trial
eTRV+, a British made electronic thermostatic radiator valve was selected by the RBS Innovation Gateway to be trialled at The Waterfront, a two floor office in Elstree. The Chalmor eTRV+ fits directly to radiators in place of traditional TRV’s enabling automatic room by room heating control.
The primary heating is by gas fired boilers that supply radiators and controlled by a Building Management System together with a boiler control system and would therefore be considered to be already efficiently controlled. eTRV+ technology would further reduce the load on the boilers and enable individual control of floors and offices thereby realising additional energy savings.
eTRV+ reduces energy consumption and delivers higher levels of comfort by:
– More accurate temperature measurements than traditional TRV’s thereby reducing overheating.
– Tamperproof so that occupants cannot randomly change settings.
– Individual time schedules enable radiators to be switched off when not required and provide more granular control than possible by the BMS.
– Weekly valve exercise cycle prevents valves from sticking open or shut.
There is a history at Elstree of staff using temporary electric heaters to supplement heating and if eTRV+ did achieve the required temperature in a more efficient manner then it was expected that a reduction would be seen in both the gas and electric consumption. Conversely if eTRV+ failed to achieve the required comfort levels then despite reducing gas consumption an increase in electricity consumption would be seen.
The Waterfront Gas consumption reduced by 51% over four months from January to April 2017. The saving was 101,684 kWh, reducing emissions by 18.3 tCO2. At the same time electricity consumption also decreased by 12% evidencing that comfort levels were at the least maintained.
Adjusting the savings for weather using degree day information it would suggest that over a full 12 months that it would be possible to reduce gas consumption by as much as 30% – 40%.
